Toronto Rape Crisis Centre/Multicultural Women Against Rape Volunteer and Committee Member (July 2018–September 2020)
I volunteered in multiple roles with the Toronto Rape Crisis Centre / Multicultural Women Against Rape, including as a Crisis Line Counsellor, Front Desk Volunteer, and Media and Marketing Committee Member for Take Back the Night.
As a Crisis Line Counsellor, I supported survivors over the phone using trauma-informed practices, drawing on extensive training and later helping to facilitate this same training for new volunteers. At the front desk, I greeted visitors, spoke with media and survivors, maintained the waiting list, and edited the centre’s pamphlets and informational materials.
As part of the Media and Marketing Committee for Take Back the Night, I developed social media content and created a Q&A series for parents and youth workers on how to talk to children and youth about healthy relationships, consent, and sexual health. I also served as a Bowlathon Fundraiser Team Leader, managing donations and creating promotional content. A story I wrote about unexpectedly meeting Ontario’s Premier—and asking him for a donation was published in Now Magazine, resulting in centre donations and inspiring the Ottawa Rape Crisis Centre to launch a fundraising initiative named for my interaction. As a Sexual Assault Awareness Month Campaign Writer in May 2019, I wrote speeches, social media and infographic copy, and other informational materials for the Centre’s educational outreach.
